Senior Medical Writer/Editor - Camden, London - AS&K

Business Type: Medical Communications Agency
Job Type: Medical Writing and Editorial
Job Level: Experienced (non manager)
Position: Full Time
Location: London
Reference: sen-med-wri-ed

Are you passionate about science – captivated by the story behind the medicine? Do you have creative flair and enjoy coming up with cracking solutions to challenging briefs? Perhaps you want to be empowered to take ownership of your work and feel valued for your contributions.

With offices in London and the US, AS&K offers medical communications with a global vision. Alongside our partner agency Remedica, we work with some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies to develop creative solutions that inspire change, influence clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.

We believe that to deliver great work, you need to love what you do. We’re not just experts, we’re science enthusiasts.

If you love communicating medical science, we invite you to join our thriving scientific content team as a Senior Medical Writer/Editor. This is a key role within the team, helping us grow to support our expanding business. You will have the chance to work in a range of therapy areas including immunology, cardiology and neurology.

This position would suit a scientific/medical writer or editor who has experience working within a medical communications, medical education or healthcare advertising agency and would like to step up into a more senior role. This is also an attractive position for those already in a senior role who may wish to move to an agency where they are encouraged to make the role their own and are given the chance to shape and influence communications projects.

Senior members of our scientific content team enjoy a high degree of autonomy in their work, and with this responsibility comes opportunities to interact with colleagues in our in-house account management, creative and digital teams, as well as develop productive relationships with clients and key opinion leaders. Importantly, the Senior Medical Writer/Editor will act as content lead for complex projects where their subject matter knowledge and experience in the sector will add real value to our clients. Those in this senior role will be able to advise and lead their colleagues as part of a team to achieve great outcomes.

AS&K has a strong commitment to developing staff, and so candidates should have the confidence that we will work alongside them to realise their professional aspirations.

Responsibilities include:
  • Having in-depth understanding of several therapeutic areas, and actively applying knowledge of pharmaceutical/device products, their competitors and therapy area trends.
  • Integrating, interpreting and summarising scientific data from a variety of sources, and adapting this information according to the audience and client brief.
  • Independently producing accurate, concise and insightful material across projects that requires limited input during editorial review; using structural editing skills (rewriting, changing order, flow, etc) with confidence as required.
  • Reviewing and signing off the work of colleagues and offering mentorship to more junior team members, providing appropriate, consistent feedback.
  • Confidently adapting writing and editing style for different audiences and for a range of print and digital media, including websites, apps, animations, medical images, events materials and slides.
  • Highly proficient use of PowerPoint to create and edit slides with a range of complexity, such as formatting text, figures, graphs and animations.
  • Having excellent research and fact-checking capabilities, including checking work against source materials or producing original material to a scientifically robust standard that requires only spot checks by editorial management; resolving most queries independently.
  • Communicating effectively with all departments and senior management, providing briefings as required; proactively seeking ways to improve efficiency and/or quality to achieve team goals.
  • Interacting effectively with clients, key opinion leaders and external teams, and taking a lead role in preparing for events and on site.
  • Taking responsibility for significant aspects of team projects, adhering to delivery timelines, budgets and client expectations, while supporting senior colleagues with project demands.
  • Providing input to new business proposals and attending pitches if required to do so by senior team members.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven experience in a relevant STM setting, ideally in a medical communications, medical education or healthcare advertising agency.
  • Prior experience in the fields of immunology, cardiology and neurology would be advantageous.
  • Solid track record with client and opinion leader interaction, including in teleconferencing and face-to-face meetings.
  • Good project management skills and commercial awareness.
  • A life science degree is essential; higher degrees are desirable.
Location: Camden, London
