Job Title:                   Medical Writer

Department:             Medical Writing

Reports To:               Editorial Manager


JOB PURPOSE            

A Fishawack Medical Writer (MW) researches, writes, edits and prepares high-quality material for a variety of customised medical communications initiatives. A keen interest in medical science and writing, coupled with an ability to work to strict deadlines and specifications is essential.


A MW is responsible for developing and delivering original, accurate, high-quality content (manuscripts, slides, and other editorial assignments) within the project specifications, timeline, and budget. This will involve:

•         liaising with clients, authors and colleagues to progress projects effectively,

•         attending congresses, symposia and advisory board meetings as required and liaising with speakers and clients

•         providing input on project specifications, costings and schedules, working with the internal account team to ensure projects are delivered to time and budget

•         providing good briefings to colleagues and freelancers

•         actively participating in account development meetings to grow repeat business

•         mentoring new writers (depending on individual, level of experience and opportunity)




Content development

Research, write, and revise high-quality, original editorial content:

•         within the specified number of hours and to agreed timelines

•         according to the brief/to meet marketing objectives

•         to appropriate length and style

•         with correct use of English

•         with scientific accuracy


·        Develops clear, concise outlines, on-target first drafts, and proactively incorporates data/revisions

·        Ensures scientific accuracy and appropriate referencing

·        Maintains focus and completes projects in timely manner, meeting project timeline, and staying within budget (assuming project scope does not change)

·        Assesses each project to proactively identify areas that will require assistance from others (i.e. graphic design, editorial support); elicits help as needed

·        Able to work independently but asks for help when appropriate

·        Continuously complies with Fishawack standard editorial procedures, including ethical standards

Client and external expert communication

Represent the company at client meetings (e.g., advisory boards, speaker-training meetings, symposia) in a professional manner.

·        Serves as onsite editorial resource in a professional manner

·        Reviews and revises programme content, as needed in an accurate and timely manner

·        Prepares speakers for their presentations in a professional manner

·        Anticipates additional onsite needs and proactively prepares for these needs

·        Proactively assists project team; acts as a collaborative team member

Internal communication and team work

Effectively and proactively communicate with team members (editorial, editorial support project, client), authors/faculty, and vendors in areas related to project completion.

·        Ensures that information is communicated effectively within internal project teams

·        Keeps project team and manager apprised of project(s) status (through weekly status meetings or routine email communications) and challenges encountered during the project (e.g., changes in scope, delays in receiving comments)

·        Prioritises work, as appropriate and with help of project team and manager

·        Proactively provides input to team members to enhance project outcomes

·        Offers to assist others in times of slow workloads and requests assistance during times of heavy workloads
