Job Details:

This is an opportunity to join a leading medical communications agency in the pivotal position of Editorial Director / Associate Editorial Director and be based in their London or Cheshire offices.

This position is responsible for providing the company and its clients with editorial, scientific and strategic expertise related to client project needs, client proposals and strategies. The successful candidate will lead a publications team and will manage a team of medical writers and scientific advisers and supervise scientific support in new business development.

Scientific and Editorial:

  • Research scientific areas and provide reviews of scientific and therapeutic areas
  • Develop Group proposals on scientific themes to enhance the Group’s position in client programs and to gain new business
  • Analyze and assimilate market and product information in order to provide consultancy advice on product differentiation, positioning and marketing strategy
  • Use scientific expertise, contributing to the strategic direction of client products
  • Support project teams, contributing ideas and sharing experiences by drawing on working knowledge of the different tools available for communicating messages in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Take, interpret and develop briefs from colleagues and clients
  • Take a lead in conceptual development of editorial projects
  • Develop innovative communications strategies and tactics to meet clients’ needs
  • Draft and edit work in different writing styles and targeted at different audiences in different therapeutic areas
  • Edit and re-write drafts to take account of feedback from editorial colleagues, project team colleagues, clients and independent clinicians
  • Review other team members’ work for editorial and scientific accuracy
  • Develop and execute processes to maintain the Group’s scientific integrity, writing excellence, quality control and productivity
  • Develop and oversee editorial quality control processes, including copy review, as appropriate, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness of procedures

Editorial Project Management:

  • Project manage one or more larger editorial projects
  • Monitor overall project costs for multiple and complex projects
  • Provide guidance on deadlines and editorial time for project estimates/schedules
  • Assign editorial projects to medical writers and oversee content development for these projects, ensuring that they are completed on time and within the time allocated in the project estimate.
  • Coordinate with client services and other colleagues to reach a consensus on content and style for assigned editorial projects
  • Play an active role in establishing a cohesive and dynamic relationship between accounts teams, other editorial colleagues and the client
  • Liaise with in-house design and production teams, source graphical representations, and contribute ideas for optimizing design and layout of assigned editorial projects

Client Support:

  • Attend conferences, scientific symposia and advisory boards where appropriate
  • Coordinate at an appropriate level with external parties such as clients and opinion leaders
  • Build successful relationships with client marketing and medical staff
  • Identify and develop KOL relationships

Management and Supervision:

  • Actively participate in Management Team meetings and act as Editorial Lead in Management Team activities
  • Manage the Editorial teams within other offices as appropriate; conducting performance reviews for all direct reports in coordination with HR
  • Assess resourcing needs and expansion opportunities for the Editorial department
  • Take an active role in recruitment of new members of Editorial and make recommendations to HR on internal and external training and development of direct and wider teams

Business Development:

  • Identify new business opportunities both with existing and new clients
  • Supervise or take the lead role in the creative development and preparation of proposals and pitches for new business; attend and present at pitches where deemed appropriate
  • Attend and present at client meetings for new business development where appropriate

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • BSc in the life sciences, preferably an MSc or PhD or PharmD
  • A wealth of relevant medical marketing writing experience (agency or pharmaceutical)
  • Experience of creating a wide range of marketing materials over a range of therapy areas
  • Experience in mentoring and managing staff
  • Expert computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and online medical resources
